Soda or soft drink is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. People love it because of the refreshing taste and fizz that it brings. However, studies claim that soda causes acid peptic disease and heartburn because of its acid content. It is also proven to contain sugar and empty calories that increases your waistline in every gulp. Because of its ill effects, people have been looking for a healthier alternative to satisfy their cravings for a fizzy drink.

Soda water is the closest that you can get to a regular soda. It is carbonated water with no other compounds and flavorings. Soda water often mimics the taste of mineral water and the fizz of a regular soda. Soda water has been around since time immemorial and soda siphon became widely popular in the 1960’s. It is gaining popularity again especially to people who want to quit drinking soft drinks but is it really a healthy alternative?

Just like regular water

Soda water is just as healthy as regular drinking water. You will reap all the benefits you get from potable water without worrying about the health risks. It will keep you hydrated and flush toxins out of your body. You can even drink eight glasses of soda water everyday and your belly will not grow an inch. There are flavored versions of soda water, which usually contain natural flavors like lime, lemon and peach. It is a lot better than diet sodas because it does not contain any artificial sweeteners or sugar.

Packed with vitamins and minerals

There are several brands of soda water out there so make sure to check the labels for vitamins and minerals before you choose a brand. Some soda water brands are now adding vitamins and minerals in their products to make more marketable. Most brands do not really have a significant amount of vitamins and minerals in them but getting some extra nutrients is better than getting nothing at all.

Sugar and Sodium

Sugar and sodium are the two things to watch out for when you look at the labels. Some brands add sugar and sodium to improve the flavor of their product. High sodium content may cause dehydration instead of the hydration that water usually brings. If you will drink soda water with high sodium and sugar content, you might as well drink soft drinks.

Homemade soda water

If you do not trust any soda brands in the market, you can make your own soda water. You will need to purchase a soda siphon bottle and soda chargers. Only a few companies make modern versions of soda siphons. You can purchase a one-liter and two-liter soda siphon. Soda water is very easy to make. You just need to put water inside the soda siphon bottle, charge it by using the soda chargers, and keep it refrigerated. You can also mix soda water with your favorite fruit juice to add some flavor.

If you want a guilt-free fizz, buy a bottle of soda water or mix your own.
